BOLD prides itself on the quality and diversity of our staff. Each instructor brings a wealth of personal and professional experience to our expeditions. Dr. Szu-Ting Yi
Instructor since 2008
Szu-Ting grew up in Taiwan and moved to the United States to pursue a PhD in computer science at the University of Pennsylvania which she completed in 2006. While in graduate school she fell in love with climbing and gave up a lucrative carreer in engineering in order to pursue her passion of outdoor education. Szu-Ting is an accomplished mountaineer and climber and recently completed a certicication course from the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA). A current instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and Passages Northwest Szu-Ting is excited to return this summer to BOLD and inspire another generation of outdoor leaders.
Alexis Sandoval
Instructor since 2009
Alex grew up in the lake district of Chile in South America and has been climbing and enjoying outdoor sports since a young age. Alex studied at the University Austral in Chile and graduated as a Biologist in 1997. After college Alex spent a few years in New Zealand before returning to Chile where he began working as a climbing and mountaineering guide. Alex has been guiding groups in biking, trekking, climbing and other adventure sports for over 10 years. For the past 4 years he was an instructor for Outward Bound Colorado leading 14 - 30 day mountaineering expeditions in the Rocky Mountains. This will be his first summer with BOLD.

Teddy Wright
Instructor and Program Consultant since 2007
A talented facilitator, storytellar, teacher and youth worker, Teddy creates caring comunities wherever he goes. After graduating from Harvard College with a degree in African-American Studies and Philosophy in 2004 Teddy worked for Teach for America serving students in inner city Miami and as a free lance consultant working with non-profit and governmental organizations to help create youth friendly spaces and include greater youth voice in their decision making. He is curretnly pursuing a gruelling Masters in Social Work at the University of Washington and is looking forward to returning to BOLD this summer and doing what he loves most: teaching, talking, and empowering.
Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Barker
Instructor since 2007
Jeffrey grew up in the farmland of Ohio and had his first mountaineering experience on a 30 day National Outdoor Leadership School course in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. Currently Jeffrey is a pastor at the Columbia Lakewood Community Church in Columbia City and finishing his Doctorate in Theology at Seattle University. A talented story tellar, Jeffrey loves sharing his knowledge of local history and his international travels around the evening campfire. He has spent the last thirty years exploring the Cascade and Olympic mountains and is excited to return each summer and share these special places with the next generation.
Andrew A. Jay
B.O.L.D. Program Director / Instructor since 2007
Andrew is a northwest native, born and raised on San Juan Island, WA. He attended New College of Florida, in Sarasota, and graduated in 2003 with a degree in Cultural Anthropology and Political Science. During college he led sea kayaking and rock climbing trips for YMCA Camp Orkila’s Teen Expedition program where he developed a passion for outdoor education and its ability to create strong and altruistic community leaders. After college he worked for Outward Bound and the National Outdoor Leadership School leading wilderness expeditions in Alaska, Colorado, Wyoming, Florida, the American Southwest, the Yukon Territories of Canada, and the Pacific Northwest. In 2005 Andrew took a year long post with Outward Bound South Africa to help train staff and build a leadership development program for South African youth. In addition to his work with B.O.L.D. Andrew is currently completing a Masters in Non-Profit Leadership (MNPL) at Seattle University.
